What the filter used to be, and what it is now
In 2023, the screening question on an AI deck was simple: is this a real AI use case, or is this a feature dressed up as a product? Founders who could demonstrate that their problem genuinely required modern foundation models cleared the bar.
By 2024, the question moved to: is the team capable of building this in a market where talent is scarce and infrastructure is expensive? GPU access, model fine-tuning experience, and named research credentials carried weight.

Proprietary data flywheel, not API access. The strongest AI moats in 2026 are built on data the founder has structural access to and competitors do not. Beyond the AI question, there is a quieter filter operating in 2026 that affects every AI deck whether founders realize it or not: capital efficiency expectations have moved sharply.
In 2021, an AI Seed company raising $3M to spend 18 months on R&D before any revenue was a normal pattern. In 2026, that same plan reads as profligate.
